The Government Finance Institute (GFI) was created by some of NYGFOA’s most experienced government finance professionals from both the public and private sectors, and offers a unique opportunity to gain a well-rounded working knowledge of the core functional areas of government finance at a cost-conscious price.

The GFI program is a comprehensive, two-level certificate program providing a series of in-depth workshops and forums at both a foundation (basic) and advanced level. Graduates will be formally recognized for their commitment to professional excellence.

This multi-year professional development program features thorough and reliable educational training in the nine core areas of government finance:

  • Accounting
  • Auditing
  • Cash Management
  • Debt Management
  • Ethics
  • Financial Reporting
  • Human Resource Management
  • Internal Control
  • Performance Management

In addition to the required workshops and forums, GFI enrollees must earn a specified number of elective credits. Elective credits can be obtained through participation at other NYGFOA training programs including the Annual Conference, regional seminars, and webinars. GFI credit information, along with CPE credit information, is provided with every program's session description in event announcements and brochures. GFI credit can only be obtained from NYGFOA programming.

Participation in the GFI Program

Membership in NYGFOA is not required to enroll in the GFI or to take any of the GFI coursework although all programming is discounted for NYGFOA members. Formal enrollment in the GFI is also not required to attend GFI workshops/forums; however it is highly recommended for those committed to professional excellence. GFI enrollees gain access to exclusive benefits and services such as:

  • Acknowledgement of completion disseminated to desired individuals/entities for publication.
  • Formal recognition of your commitment to professional excellence.
  • Framed Government Finance Institute certificate upon completion of each level (Foundations and Advanced).
