Pivot Table Clinic Webinar Series

Tuesday, April 27th, May 4th, May 11th (1:00 pm - 2:15 pm) 

This is a three-day workshop. When registering for this event you will be signed up for all three sessions. All attendees will receive a recording of each session once all the live programs have been held.

April 27th, Session 1: 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM  I 1.5 CPE - Advisory Services* | 1.5 GFI Elective Credits
In the first session, we will review the features of Excel tables in preparation for working with Pivot types.  Pivots work most effectively with transactional type data and require a clean data set.  We will look at how to easily eliminate black rows and address leading trailing and extra spaces between words plus capitalization issues by nesting the trim and proper functions.  Then we will create some simple pivot tables and establish a workflow to identify possible errors. We will explore how the field functions work, look at subtotal and grand totals, and explore general advice on how to best set up rows and columns. We will end this session by looking at how to present your data as a percent of row or column.

May 4th, Session 2: 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM  I 1.5 CPE - Advisory Services* | 1.5 GFI Elective Credits
This session will begin by looking at how to group data, where the field results are numeral common uses, are dates, ages, and salary ranges. Non-numerical data can also be grouped we will cover practical uses for grouping non-numerical data as well. This session will also explore filtering a data set that has a third or fourth dimension, using slicers or the field list. We also will look at how to create filter tabs.  (This is great for billing and the allocation of expenses to individual units and many other government finance applications as well.)  This session will also explore how to do an analysis of data, create pivot charts, and exporting those charts into word or PowerPoint in static or dynamical format. We will also explore how to use your pivot table to generate an ordinary table for any subset. 

May 11th, Session 3: 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM I 1.5 CPE - Advisory Services* | 1.5 GFI Elective Credits  
In this session we will explore more advanced features of Pivot tables, such as using multiple pivot tables with the same or different data sets to create a dashboard.  In the previous session we worked with slicers, this session will look at how to link one slicer to multiple pivot tables or pivot charts and how to use this as an effective presentation tool at meetings or public hearings.  Typically pivot data defaults to alphabetical, we will explore how to create your own list order, and show or not show items that have no amounts, etc.  We also will cover how to create calculated fields and work with parent and subset fields in rows and columns using three different report layouts.  How to get data out of a table (Get Pivot Data) and how to make that dynamic using data validation. Lastly, we will look at many practical uses of Pivot tables in government finance.

*  These sessions will also qualify for non-interactive self-study CPE credit.  To earn this credit, a quiz, including spreadsheet problems and analysis, will be required.

CPE/GFI CREDITS

  • CPE- Viewers of the live program can receive CPE credit by responding to live poll questions. Those viewing the recording must complete a short quiz to receive credit. 
  • GFI- Credit can be earned from both live and recordings of the program 

CANCELLATION POLICY: 

  • Cancellation notices must be made in writing and emailed to info@nygfoa.org.
  • Cancellations made up to one week prior to the event, will be refunded the registration fee less an administrative fee of $15.00.
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than one week before the event; the registrant is liable for the full amount of registration.
  • No Shows are liable for all registration fees.
